From Refugee to UCLA Graduate: Why I Care About Helping My Community
My path to working in taxes did not start with accounting books or tax forms.
It started with a journey that many immigrants understand very well, starting over in a new country and trying to build a better future.
Growing Up Between Countries
I was born in Albania, but early in my life, my family became refugees, and we moved to Greece.
Like many immigrant families, that meant starting from zero. A new country, a new culture, and a new language.
I had to learn Greek while adapting to a completely different environment. Nothing came easy, and every step forward required work.
Eventually, my journey brought me to the United States in 2011.
Starting Over Again in the United States
Coming to the United States meant starting over once again.
This time, I had to learn English, understand a new school system, and figure out how everything worked in a completely different country.
Many immigrants know this feeling. Things that seem simple to others can feel incredibly complicated when you are learning a new language and trying to build a life at the same time.
But through persistence and a lot of hard work, I continued my education and kept pushing forward.
Eventually, I achieved something that once felt almost impossible: I graduated from UCLA.
A Dream That Once Felt Impossible
When I decided what to study, I chose geography.
For me, geography was never just about maps or places. It was about understanding the world and the people who live in it.
Because of my life experience, growing up in Albania, living in Greece, and later moving to the United States, I’ve always felt like a citizen of the world.
Living in different countries and learning different languages taught me that people everywhere share many of the same hopes: stability, opportunity, and a better future for their families.
One of my biggest dreams was to attend UCLA. At the time, it felt like something that might never happen. Coming from a refugee background and adapting to new languages made that goal feel very far away.
But I worked hard and stayed focused, and eventually I was able to accomplish that dream.
That experience shaped how I see challenges today. If I were able to overcome those obstacles and achieve something that once seemed impossible, I believe others can achieve their dreams too.
Why I Chose to Work in Taxes
During my journey, I saw many people in immigrant communities facing the same struggles I experienced.
Simple things like understanding taxes, government forms, financial planning, and business rules can be very confusing when you are new to the country.
Many families work incredibly hard but don’t always have someone who can explain how the system works.
That is one of the reasons I became involved in tax preparation and financial education.
Taxes are not just numbers on forms. They are connected to people’s lives, their families, and their future.
Helping People Beyond Tax Preparation
For me, helping someone with their taxes is only part of the work.
What matters most is helping people understand how the system works so they can make better decisions for themselves and their families.
- Planning for their children’s education
- Starting a small business
- Understanding tax credits and benefits
- Preparing financially for the future
Many first-generation families are incredibly hardworking, but navigating financial and tax systems can feel overwhelming without guidance.
Why This Work Matters to Me
Because of my own journey, I understand how difficult it can be to start over in a new country.
I know what it feels like to learn a new language, adapt to a new system, and try to create opportunities that did not exist before.
That experience is the reason I care deeply about helping others who are walking a similar path.
Whether someone needs help filing their taxes, understanding financial decisions, or planning for their future, my goal is to help them move forward.
Irini’s Final Thoughts
Every person’s journey is different, but many immigrant families share the same goal: building a better future for themselves and the next generation.
My own path, from refugee to learning new languages to graduating from UCLA, showed me that achieving a dream is possible through persistence and support.
That is why I am committed not only to helping people with taxes but also to helping them understand the system and plan for their future.
